History of General Rosecrans Elementary School

Opened: 2010
General Rosecrans Elementary School represents a new chapter in the long tradition of education within the Big Walnut community. Built to support a rapidly growing district, the school was designed to provide modern learning spaces while continuing the legacy of strong elementary education in Sunbury.
A New Era of Growth
By the early 2000s, continued residential growth in and around Sunbury placed increasing demands on Big Walnut’s elementary buildings. To meet the needs of a rising student population and to create more balanced enrollment across the district, plans were developed for a new elementary school.
General Rosecrans Elementary School opened its doors in 2010, marking a significant milestone in the district’s expansion.
The addition of this new building allowed the district to:
- Reduce overcrowding in existing elementary schools
- Provide updated, purpose-built classrooms for younger learners
- Continue delivering high-quality instruction in a growing community
Continuing a Historic Legacy
The opening of General Rosecrans Elementary also signaled a shift in how existing buildings were used across the district. With students moving into the new facility, the historic Harrison Street building closed temporarily after decades of serving elementary students.
This transition reflects a broader pattern in Big Walnut’s history: adapting spaces and structures to meet the evolving needs of students and families.
The Namesake: General William S. Rosecrans
The school is named in honor of General William Starke Rosecrans, a distinguished Union general during the Civil War with deep ties to the Sunbury area.
Rosecrans’ legacy includes:
- Service as a respected military leader during the Civil War
- Recognition as a prominent historical figure connected to Sunbury
- Continued local commemoration through monuments and landmarks
His name connects the school to the broader story of the community, blending local heritage with the future of education.
A Modern Learning Environment
Designed with today’s learners in mind, General Rosecrans Elementary provides:
- Flexible classroom spaces that support collaboration and small-group learning
- Access to technology and resources that enhance instruction
- A welcoming environment focused on student growth and achievement
The building reflects the district’s commitment to preparing students not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
Looking Ahead
Since opening in 2010, General Rosecrans Elementary School has become an integral part of the Big Walnut Local School District, serving generations of students during a period of continued community growth.
As the district evolves, the school remains a cornerstone for early education, carrying forward the mission to Inspire and Guide every student who walks through its doors.
